Top Human Geography Flashcards

Human beings are the most widespread land mammal on Earth. We have colonized every continent, and our communities survive in mountains, deserts, jungles, tundra – even the open ocean! Few other land-dwelling animals are as adaptable as Homo sapiens.

That’s why it’s so fascinating to study the geography of human beings. Human geography covers all kinds of spatial information on how human beings use, organize, and traverse the landscape of our planet. Using human geography, for example, you can overlay a map of language-users over a political map of national borders. You’ll see that language partially conforms to these borders, but also bleeds readily from one side over to the other. Similarly, you can compare population density to environmental factors and try to figure out why certain areas (like northern India) are crammed with people, while other areas (like the western US) are almost entirely unpopulated outside of a few small pockets.

Perhaps most importantly, human geography allows us to predict the future. If, over time, we see a disease or climate effect appear in one area, we can use human geography to predict how it will spread over time and how human communities will be affected.
