Top History Of Psychology Flashcards

The history of psychology begins with myths. Every culture on earth has produced its own stories about how the world was made, how human beings fit into it, and where we are all headed. Those myths are unique to the cultures that make them, but they also contain insights about human psychology that can be understood even by people in other cultures. For example, many myths contain stories about love and desire, which are different from the stories told in Western culture but still contain some of the same emotional concepts.

The formal study of psychology was initiated by philosophers in Greece, India, and China (though the Greeks are the ones that usually get all the credit). These philosophers were beginning to think rationally and systematically about the world around them, employing a form of reasoning that is still used in science today.

Around the beginning of the 20th century, a few scientists decided to translate the psychological insights of myth and philosophy into a science. The science of psychology was founded by Sigmund Freud, a neuroscientist who believed that the brain was the key to understanding behavior.
