Top Pig Flashcards

Pigs are large barnyard animals related to wild boars. They can survive on an extremely broad diet, and will eat just about anything. In fact, this may have been one of the original reasons for human beings to domesticate them — the first pigs may have acted as garbage disposals! They are omnivores, meaning they will readily eat plants or other animals, and in this way they are quite similar to humans.

Because they are willing to eat garbage and live in dirty conditions, pigs are sometimes considered to be unclean or “low” animals. Pigs, however, are surprisingly intelligent and can solve complex problems that are too difficult for dogs and even some primates. They also have an excellent sense of smell, and some pigs can be trained to help dig up rare, valuable fungi called truffles, which are used in high-end cooking. Pigs, however, are mostly raised for their meat, which is popular in many different kinds of cuisine.
