Top Frog Flashcards

Frogs are a group of animals that usually live in warm, wet places like jungles and swamps. Frogs are highly adaptable, however, and some have managed to adapt to pretty extreme environments. Wood frogs, for example, live in Alaska and actually freeze solid during the winter every year. When the sun comes back, they thaw out and go about their lives!

Frogs are amphibians, meaning they have wet skin and lay their eggs in water, so they can’t survive in a dry climate. All frogs start their lives as tadpoles, tiny fish-like creatures that breathe through gills and swim around in shallow pools. As they grow up, their gills develop into lungs and they start to breathe air. At the same time, they grow legs and change color to blend in with their new habitat on the land.

Most frogs are carnivores, getting their nutrients from the bodies of other animals. This usually means eating insects, which many frogs can catch on long, sticky tongues. In other environments, though, frogs have adapted to eating fruit or other plants.
