-New opportunities for monks + lay people
-Focus on wisdom + compassion
Expansiveness: Both monks + lay ppl can achieve liberation
Universality: Less historical/ cultural, more poetic
|
Key Charateristics of Mahayana Buddhism
|
Expansiveness & Universality
-Literature : sutras atributed to the Buddha
-Cosmology: Modle of the unvierse (buddha is everywhere)
-Buddhology: Conception of the Buddhas & Bodhistattvas
Doctrine: key Teachings!!!
Methodology:forms of practice
|
Soteriology
|
Theory or conception of liberation/salvation
The realm of samsara (cycle of rebirth) is not different than the realm of nirvana (liberation)
No differene between what is "sacred" and what is considered not.
what your experiencing right now is sacred
|
Buddha
|
Buddha is a mythological truth - a template to followers
-Buddha is everywhere -cosmology and therefore everything becomes sacred
|

|
Shunyata or Emptiness
|
Lack of intrinsic existence (Core of teaching)
-All factors of existence are "empty" of existing independently - Nothing stands alone
-There is not ultiamte truth
-There is no inherent essence to a thing or a person
-EXP. The body is like a horse drawn cart things have just come together temporarily, there is nothing permanent and nothing unchanging-
|
Emptiness to Compassion
|
Everything is ultimatley inter-realted in the web of mutual conditionality or "inter -being"
E.g., It makes not sense for one part of a whole to act in a way that harms any other part - no disconnect of eperation
|
Devotion
|
Not empahzied in early tradition
but empahized in buddhismm as a skillfull means
- Devotion is a tool to relieve peoples suffering using one the five arhetypes
