What 3 parts is the skin composed of?
Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis
Epidermis
Surface of skin
Dermis
Next deep layer after Epidermis; contains connective tissue
Hypodermis
Subcutaneous layer
What are the 5 layers of the Epidermis?
Stratum: corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, basale
Stratum Corneum
Most superficial layer of flat, dead cells filled with protein keratin that protects against heat, pathogenic microorganisms, chemicals, and light (in Epidermis)
Stratum Lucidum
After the corneum; clear, flat cells with a prekeratin substance (eleidin) that is found primarily in the palms of hands and soles of feet
Stratum Granulosum
After lucidium; contains flattened cells containing keratohyalin (later will become keratin)
Stratum Spinosum
Layer after granulosum; large layer where keratin is produced in many of these cells
Stratum Basale
Deepest layer (after spinosum); single layer of cuboidal and columnar cells that undergo mitosis and become the cells of the more superficial layers; also called Stratum Germinativum
What does the dermis contain?
Many fibers of collagen
What is the most superficial region of the dermis? What is the remainder of the dermis?
Popillary region; dermal layer
What is within the dermal layer?
Number of sebaceous glands (oil glands that are connected to hair follicles)
What are other glands in the dermis?
Sweat glands ("sudoriferous glands"): deliver their watery secretions (sweat)
Where does the sweat go from the sweat glands?
To the sweat gland ducts then to the sweat gland pores
