(1) why do society differentiate people through the use of gender?
(2) Why is it that in most societies, male tends to be on top?

Two schools of thought that came out of this
Biological determinism
differentiation socialization
Refers to the catelouge of anatomical, hormonal, chemical, and physical differences between women and men.
Sex differences
Refers to the biologicalness - chromo, chemical, anatomy (male and female)
Sex
Refers to the meanings that are attached to those differences within a culture (feminity and masculinity)
Gender
Similarities between the two school of thoughts x2
(1) they see men and women as different from one another
-they see the differences BETWEEN men and women are more worth to explore thand differences AMONG me and AMONG females. (interplanetary theory)

(2) Difference causes domination
Sees the expression and organization of gender as the result of historsy and cultural change, socialization of individuals and continuous interplay gendered individuals/institution (more malleous and variable)

Men
Invisibility is a ___ (eg. white people have the luxury to not think about race and men have the luxury to not think about gender everyday of their life)
Priviledge
Men, like white people, become defensive when put up againist racism and sexism
Invisibility of privledge
What is the one form of masculinity that reigns supreme?
Hegemonic defi.
Upheld as the model - defined againist both women, boys, gays, etc.
Hegemonic
A theory developed by R.W connel to explain male gender ideology. There may be many versions of masulinity but one is worthy and the other masulinitiy ares just subordinates. Dominance and competition is necessary
Hegemonic masculinity
RW connell's model of female gender ideology ; which asserts that feminity is displayed as compliance with gender inequality and is oriented to accomodating the interess and desires of men
