*4/5ths or 80% Rule*
"rule of thumb", EEOC determins Adverse Impact for enforcement proceedings. Discrimination considered to occor if the selection rate for a protected group is less than 4/5th or 80% of the groups representation in the labor market or less than 80% of the selection rate for the majority of the group. Considered discrimanatory unless justified by a business neccessity.
Abeyance
The condition of being undetermined. To place a pending motion (grievance) outside the time limits until it can be taken up and processed in the future.
Ad hoc
Latin "for this", for special purpose. An ad hoc committee is not permanent, exists only as long as the special job remains to be done.

Jointly selected by the parties to serve in single arbitration. The arbitrator may hear more than one case in one arbitration hearing. Specific focus, SME.

Latin. Another self. An alter ego company may result when the same owner and manager of one company shuts down operations and opens under a new name, still same business.

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
Term applied to different types of employee complaint or dispute resolution procedures.
American Arbitration Association (AAA)
Private, non-profit org to foster the study of arbitration, perfect it of this voluntary dispute settlement, administering arbitration in accordance with the agreement of the parties. Maintains panels from which arbitrators may be selected and provide adminstrative and procedures for cases being arbitrated under AAA. Charge for service.
Amicus Curiae
Latin. Friend of the court. Person that has no right be appear in a suit but is allowed to introduce argument or evidence, usually in form of a brief, to protect his interests.
Animus, Anti-Union
Animus is Latin meaning mind, attitude, intention or disposition. Official term for anti-union sentiments that may affect management action and may result in union org, members or reps being harassed.
Arbitrary
Describes an action or decision that is made without cause or consideration of objective standard, is random in nature.
