Hyperkeratosis

Nicotine Stomatitis
|
Caused by heat in nonfilter tobacco or pipe smoke not from nicotine. Has whitish appearance along with red minor salivary glands on palate

Smokers Melanosis
|
Smoke causes increase in melanocyte pigmentation usually in women.
|
Tobacco Pouch Keratosis
|
White lesion in area where tobacco is placed, disappears when tobacco is no longer there. Can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
|
Cheilitis/Cheilosis: Actinic (solar)
|
Inflammation and keratinization from long term sun exposure usually on lips. Can develop into sqaumous cell carcinoma.
|
Cheilitis/Cheilosis: Angular
|
Occurs in the corners of the mouth usually from loss of vertical dimension in denture patients. Sometimes associated with fungal infections.

|
Benign migratory glossitis, Erythema migrans, Stomatitis areata migrans, Glossitis areata exfoliativa.

Median rhomboid glossitis
|
Most likely fungal, loss of filliform papillae in center of tongue, asymptomatic.

Hyperplastic pulpitis
|
Pulp becomes hyperplastic when enamel wears away and the odontoblastic layer is gone.

Sialoliths
|
Salivary stone. Saliva contains calcium phosphate and it builds up and occludes duct. Rarely in parotid because it is mostly serous.

Mucocele (Mucous-Retention Phenomenon)
|
Not related to stones, but trauma. Bite down and severe duct. "Pseudo" cyst not lined with epithelium, is encapsulated by fibrous tisssue.

Ranula
|
Similar to mucocele but located on floor of mouth. Involves the sublingual, submandibular, and minor salivary glands. Must be removed.

Pyogenic granuloma
|
Proliferation of C.T. containing blood vessels and inflammatory cells, usually in pregnant females and teenagers.

Giant cell granuloma: Peripheral (Giant cell epulis)
|
Found outside of bone on soft tissue: ginigva or oral mucosa.
|
Giant cell granuloma: Central
|
Multinucleated giant cells thought to be response to bone. Central are found in mand. or max. and long bones. Can displace teeth.
