What is the purpose of the organization of the nervous system?
1)to detect changes (stimuli) in the internal and external environment. 2) evaluate that information and possibly respond by initiating changes in muscles or glands.
How is the nervous system subdivided?
It is subdivided into smaller systems and divisions.
How is the nervous system subdivided?
The nervous system is subdivided into Central Nervous System (cns) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
What makes up the CNS?
It is made up of the brain and spinal cord. It is the structural and functional center of the nervous system.
What does the cns do?
It integras incoming pieces of sensory information, evaluates the information and initiates an outgoing response.
What is the PNS?
The peripheral nervous system is made up of the nerve tissues that lie in the periphery, or outer regions of the nervous system.
What could nerve cell extensions be called if they extend from the cell body toward the cns?
They may be called central fibers.
What could nerve cell extensions be called if they extend from the cell body away from the cns?
They may be called peripheral fibers.
What do the afferent (carry toward) division of the nervous system consist of?
They consist of all the incoming sensory or afferent pathways.
What do the efferent (carry away) division of the nervous system consis of?
It consists of all the outgoing motor or efferent pathways.
What do the pathways of the somatic nervous system do?
They carry information to the somatic effectors, which are the skeletal muscles.
Where do the pathways of the autonomic nervous system carry information?
They carry information to the autonomic, or visceral, effectors, which are the smooth muscles, cardiac muscle, glands, adipose tissue, and other involuntary tissue.
How can the efferent pathways of the Autonomic nervous system be divided?
They can be divided into the syspathetic division and the parasympathetic division.
What makes up the sympathetic division?
It is made up of pathways that exit the middle portions of the spinal cord.
What is the sympathetic division involved in?
It is involved in preparing the body to deal with immediate threats to the internal environment. It produces the fight or flight response.
