What are the 3 main layers of the skin?
Epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis
Give a brief description of the HYPODERMIS
The layer of the skin that consists of AREOLAR and ADIPOSE tissue.
Give a brief description of the DERMIS
The deeper, thicker, CONNECTIVE tissue part of the skin.
Give a brief description of the EPIDERMIS
The superficial, thinner portion, which is composed of EPITHELIAL tissue.
What are LAMELLATED CORPUSCLES?
Nerve endings in the SUBCUTANEOUS layer that are sensitive to pressure.
What are KERATINOCYTES and why are they important?
The most numerous of the epithelial cells (about 90%); they produce KERATIN. Keratin helps protect the skin and underlying tissues.
What are MELANOCYTES and why are they important?
Pigmented cells that are located between or beneath cells of the deepest layer of the epidermis , that synthesizes MELANIN. Melanin absorbs damaging UV light. They constitute about 8% of epidermal cells.
What are are LANGERHANS CELLS and why are they important?
Epidermal cells that arise from red bone marrow and migrate to the epidermis, where they constitute a very small amount of the epidermal cells. They PARTICIPATE IN IMMUNE RESPONSES mounted against microbes that invade the skin.
What are MERKEL CELLS and why are they important?
They are the least numerous of the epidermal cells; They lie in the epidermis of hairless skin where they make contact with a tactile (merkel) disc, which functions in touch. They detect different aspects of TOUCH SENSATIONS.
What are the four principal types of EPIDERMAL cells?
Keratinocytes, melanocytes Langerhans cells, and Merkel cells.
What is the STRATUM BASALE?
The DEEPEST layer of the EPIDERMIS
Why are the stem cells in the STRATUM BASALE important?
They produce KERATINOCYTES.
What is the STRATUM SPINOSUM?
The layer SUPERFICIAL to the STRATUM BASALE
What types of cells would you find in the STRATUM SPINOSUM?
Keratinocytes, Langerhans cells, and melanocytes.
What is the STRATUM LUCIDIUM?
The layer that is only found in the THICK skin of the fingertips, palms, and soles. contains KERATINOCYTES.
