Front Back
Adipose Tissue
  1. specialized connective tissue that functions as a major storage site for fat, heat insulation, mechanical cushion, and a source of energy
Root Hair Plexus
Network of sensory nerve endings surrounding the hair bulb
Hair Follicle
  1. A sac from which a hair grows and into which the sebaceous (oil) glands open. The follicle is lined by cells derived from the epidermal (outside) layer of the skin.
Hair Root
The part of the hair that is embedded in the hair follicle
Hypodermis
Subcutaneous tissue, the 3rd layer of the 3 major layers of the skin: layer of fat and connective tissue and houses larger blood vessels and nerves, Major function is to maintain skin and body temperature, and act as shock absorbers
Dermis
2nd layer of the three major layers of the skin, made up of collagen, elastic tissue, and reticular fibers; made up of blood vessels, lymph vessels, sweat glands, and hair follicles
Epidermis
Outer, first layer of the skin, which has 5 layers
Stratum Corneum
  1. outermost layer of the epidermis, made up of dead flat skin cells that shed approximately every 2 weeks, composed of keratin protein
Stratum Lucidum
Middle top layer of the epidermis, present most often in thick skin, reduces friction and shear forces between the stratum corneum and structum granulosum
Stratum Granulosum
Middle layer of the epidermis, lost nuclei, classified as clumps of cytoplasmic material, much activity in this layer because keratin protein and water-proofing lipids are being produced and organized
Stratum Spinosum
  1. (also called prickle cell layer) middle bottom layer of the epidermis that starts to synthesize keratin. Cells change from columnar to polygonal
Stratum Basale
Bottommost layer of the epidermis, has columnar cells which divide and push already formed cells into the higher layers. The cells flatten and die as they move into the higher layers
Vein
A tubular branching vessel that carries blood from the capillaries to the heart
Artery
A tubular branching vessel that carries blood from the heart through the body
Pacinian Corpuscle
  1. nerve endings that are sensitive to vibration and touch
