What is Classical Conditioning?
Repeated association of the CS & UCR, through repeated linking of CS& UCS until CS alone produces a CR
What is unconditioned stimulus?
Consistently produces a particular naturally-occurring response
What is the unconditioned response?
Reflexive involuntary action caused when UCS is present
What is the Conditioned Stimulus?
Neutral stimulus at the start of the conditioning process, and is repeatedly associated with the UCS, to produce a similar response to the UCS
Association
An association is made when the neutral stimulus is paired and linked to the UCS
Conditioned response
LEARNED RESPONSE produce by the CS after it has been associated with the UCS
Acquisition
Each paired presentation of the CS with UCS which the organism learns to associate the two stimulus
Extinction
Gradual decreasing rate of CR when the CS is presented and UCS is absent and takes place when the CS no longer produces the CR

CR will become extinguished if the UCS is not paired with the CS occasionally
Spontaneous recovery
Re-emergence of the CR (thought to be previously extinct) when the CS is presented, following a rest period of CS absence
Stimulus generalisation
Tendency of a stimulus similar to the CS, to produce a response that is similar (but not necessarily identical) to the CR
Stimulus discrimination
Occurs when a person responds to the CS only, and not other stimulus that are similar
Conditioned reflex
Reflexive learned response to conditioned stimulus
Conditioned emotional response
Emotional reaction that usually occurs when ANS produces a response to a stimulus that did not previously take place
Watson's Albert elements?
UCR - fear response
CS - white rat
UCS - loud noise
UCR - crying showing fear
Stimulus generalisation - showed fear to white dog

demonstrated that fear can result from learning
Aversion therapy
Behaviour therapy that applies classical conditioning to discourage undesirable behaviour through association with an aversive stimulus

e.g. to stop nail biting, paint our nails with foul tasting substance to discourage behaviour
