Front Back
What color or Hydrogen and Helium atoms?
H: whiteHe: blue
Sublimation pertains to..
Solid & gas
Chemistry
Study of composition, structure, properties of matter and of energy consumed or given off when matter undergoes a change
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass (pure substance/Physical Process)
Mass
Defines the quantity of matter in an object
Energy
The capacity to do work
What are the Classes of Matter? Explain.
-Pure substance: same physical & chemical properties throughout; cannot be separated into simpler substance by physical process (Ex. atoms of Helium, molecules of carbon dioxide)-Physical Process: transformation of sample of matter (change in physical state) doesn't alter chemical...
Pure substance consists of...
-Element: pure substance that cannot be separated smaller by any chemical process. (Ex. Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O))-Compound: composed of 2 or more elements bonded together (Ex. Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Water (H2O)).
Mixture
Combination of 2 or more pure substances; can be separated
What are two types of mixtures?
1)Homogeneous: components are distributed uniformly throughout sample & have no boundaries or regions; also called solution. (Ex. mix of gas)2) Heterogeneous: not distributed uniformly & may have distinct regions.
Atom
Smallest particle of element retains chemical characteristic of that element.
Molecule
Assembly of 2 or more atoms that are held together in a characteristic pattern by chemical bonds.
Chemical Formula
Notation for representing elements & compounds; consists of symbols of constituent elements & subscripts identify the number of atoms of each element in one molecule.
Ammonia
NH3
Ethanol
C2H6O
