Front Back
What is Chromatin?
Means "color", made of dna and protein, scattered throughout nucleaus, condenses to form chromosomes when cell divides. Thread-unraveled
What is a Chromosomes?
Bar-like body of tightly coiled chromatin; visible during cell division
What is Hydrophobic?
Water-hating
What is Hydrophilic?
Water-loving
What is Microvilli?
Finger-like projections that increase surface area for absorption
What is Flagella?
Propells cells; only in sperm cells
What is Cilia?
Tiny hair like projections on cell surfaces that move in a wavelike manner. Moves across surface of a cell, made of protein.
What is Tight Junctions?
Impermeable junctions that bind cells together into leakproof sheets, prevents substances from passing through the extracellular space between cells.
What are desmosomes?
Anchoring junctions that prevent cells subjected to mechanical stress from being pulled apart.
What is Gap Junction?
Commonly seen in the heart and between embryonic cells, functions mainly allow communication.
What is free radical?
Highly reactive chemicals with unpaired electrons that can scramble the structure of proteins and nucleic acids.
What is a nucleus?
Control center of the cell. Holds genetic material RNA and DNA
What is plasma membrane?
Selectively permeable, maintains boundaries for cell, 2 phospholipid bylayers
What is cytoplasm?
Material outside nucleus and inside plasma membrane. Contains: cytosol, organelles, inclusions
What are ribosomes?
Sites of protein synthesis, made of protein and RNA, Free in Cytoplasm, attached to rough er
