Muhammad is seen as:
A prophet, or teacher. Islam begins with him.
How do the Sunnis choose their leaders?
A religious group that chose someone qualified to be the leaders (caliph) of the religion
How do the Shi'ites choose their leaders?
They believe you must be a descendant of Muhammad or of Ali to be caliph.
Who were the Kharijite?
A very small section- a rebellious sect, who chose their own leader.
How was Islam spread?
Went from Spain to India in a very short period of time because of military strength.
What are the basic foundations of Islam?
Shari'a- Law of Islam -If you believe in Islam, everyone is your brother/sister, and all share the same moral values.
What are the 5 tenants of Islam?
-Pray 5 times per day -Only 1 god, Muhammad is his messenger -Fasting during Ramadan -Paying alms (charity) -Making pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in one's lifetime
What made Islam grow so rapidly?
-Growth of cities (they were the centers of Islam) -Growth of Islam = growth of commercial trading
What were Muslim women like?
-very subordinate- no equality. -could not own property, divorce, or testify in court. -were restrained from public view- elite women were allowed out to study -played no direct roles in public affairs -Harems- men who chose several wives
