1. The
islands of Hawaii lie in what surface wind regime of the general circulation?
|
The Northeast Trade Winds.

The two jet streams commonly found near the
tropopause in winter are the ______________ and the
|
Subtropical
|
The dry monsoon occurs during what season?
|
The dry monsoon occurs in the winter.

Define
"mesoscale."
|
A mesoscale refers to circulations with
horizontal dimensions of about one to one thousand nautical miles.

Clouds
and precipitation are typically greater on the western side of the Sierra
Nevada mountain range in California than on the eastern side. Why?
|
1. The Sierra Nevada is oriented
SE-NW in prevailing westerlies. Therefore, the airflow is upslope on the west
side of the mountain with adiabatic cooling and more clouds and precipitation.
On the east side there is adiabatic warming and less clouds and precipitation.

What
is the usual direction of the trade winds in the Southern Hemisphere?
|
Southeast

One
of the common reasons that both the ITCZ and the Polar Front are favored
regions for bad weather is that surface winds in both regions __________, forcing upward vertical motions.

1. You
are responsible for advising an oceanic research group on the operation of an
aircraft flight to do a low-level photo survey of the Atlantic between Panama
and Gibraltar. You will be flying at
about 1,000 feet MSL at an airspeed of 170 knots. Flights will be made one day a week for a
year. There will be a full crew and
scientific equipment going one way. The
direction is arbitrary. The crew and
equipment will return by commercial airline.
It is up to you to minimize the cost of the missions (fuel, crew duty
time, etc.). On the basis of average
conditions in January and July, what would your meteorological advice be?
|
January When traveling from Panama to Gibraltar I
would suggest a path between the Icelandic Low and Bermuda High. The winds will
be coming from the southwest giving the research group a tail wind. On the
return trip from Gibraltar back to Panama choosing a path below the Bermuda
High will provide northeasterly winds, which will give the research group a
tail wind.
July In July the flight path will be the
same, except due to the ITCZ shifting north, it will result in the flight
path’s also shifting north.

1. You
want to fly a balloon across the Atlantic.
For technical reasons you must fly below 5,000 feet MSL. You want dependable (steady) winds. Where and
when should you attempt your crossing? Discuss.
|
January would be the best time to fly because
the Bermuda High has the greatest pressure difference between it and the
Icelandic Low, so if you could get a balloon between them, the winds would be
more constant and stable. Also, the balloon would have global circulation winds
and the prevailing westerly to help push you across the Atlantic.
