Tissue
In All Complex Organisms, Cells Are Organized Into Layers or Groups Called __________
Epithelial Tissue
Widespread Throughout The Body. Epithelium Covers Organs, Forms The Inner Linings Of The Body Cavities &'nd Lines Hollow Organs, It Always Has A Free Surface ( Either Exposed To The Outside Or An Open Space Internally ). Anchored To Connective Tissue By The "Basement Membrane"
Basement Membrane
Underside Of Epithelial Tissue. Thin, Nonliving Layer
Simple
Single Layer
Stratified
Many Layers
Squamous
Flattened
Cuboidal
" Square - Shaped "
Columnar
" Rectangular - Shaped "" Elongated "
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Consists Of A Single Layer Of Skin, Flattened Cells. These Cells Fit Tightly Together, Somewhat Like Floor Tiles, &'nd Their Nuclei Are Usually Broad &'nd Thin. ( Substances Pass Easily )
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Consists Of A Single Layer Of Cube - Shaped Cells. These Cells Usually Have Centrally Located, Spherical Nuclei. ( Covers Ovaries, &'nd Lines The Kidney Tubules, Ducts Of Certain Glands, Pancreas &'d Liver)
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Composed Of A Single Layer Of Elongated Cells Whose Nuclei Are Usually At About The Same Level, Near The Basement Membrane.
Microvilli
Cylindrical Processes Extending From Simple Columnar Cells &'nd Increase The Surface Area Of The Cell Membrane Where It Is Exposed To Substances Being Absorbed.
Goblet Cells
Specialized, Flask - Shaped Glandular Cells Are Scattered Among The Cells Of Simple Columnar Epithelium. They Secrete A Protective Fluid Called Mucus Onto The Free Surface Of The Tissue.
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Appear Stratified Or Layered, But They Are Not. A Layered Effect Occurs Because Nuclei Are At Two Or More Levels In A Row Of Aligned Cells. However, The Cells, Which Vary In Shape, All Reach The Basement Membrane, Eben Though Some Of Them May Not Contact The Free Surface. ( SN : Cilia Sweep Away The Mucus From The Goblet Cells )
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Consists Of Many Layers, Making This Tissue Relatively Thick. Cells Nearest To The Free Surface Are Flattened The Most, Whereas Those In The Deeper Layers, Where Cell Division Occurs, Are Cuboidal Or Columnar. As The Newer Cells Grow, Older Ones Are Pushed Farther And Farther Outward, Where They Flatten. ( Lines Oral Cavity, Throat, Esophagus, Vagina, &'nd Anal Canal )
