What three systems are involved in balance?
|
Visual, proprioceptive/somatosensory, vestibular

What causes a sensation of movement known as vertigo?
|
A disconnect between the 3 systems involved in balance (vestibular, proprioceptive, visual)- usually a spinning sensation

What is "true vertigo"
|
Problem with the vestibular system, disconnected with the other systems.

What is the feeling of disequilibrium?

What organs are involved in the vesibluar system/apparatus (canals and otolith organs) in the inner ear?

What are the name and location of each of the semicircular canals?
|
Horizonal/lateral- parallel w/ the floor, at a 30 degree angle, which is why we have to raise a pt 30 degrees so that this canal is parallel with the floor. Corresponds with the movement that happens when you shake your head "no" Superior/anterior- corresponds with the movement that happens when you nod your head "yes" Posterior/inferior- Corresponds with the head tilt

What fluid is inside the bony labryinth? What about the membraneous labryinth?

Perilymph is in the bony larbiynth, endolymph is in the membraneous labryinth

What is the vestibule?
|
 The vestibule is the central part of the osseous labyrinth, and is situated medial to the tympanic cavity, behind the cochlea, and in front of the semicircular canals. |

What is the ductus reuniens?
|
 A short membranous tube passing from the lower end of the saccule to the cochlear duct of the vestibular labyrinth. Cochlea to the saccule. Causes dizziness from loud sounds, if there is an abnormal connection. |

What is the endolypmhatic duct?
|
 Where the endolymph drians- a problem with this duct causes both vestibular and cochlear problems. Shunts endolymph from the cochlear and vestibular system. Drains in the subdural area. A small membranous canal connecting with the saccule and the utricle ofthe membranous labyrinth and terminating in the endolymphatic sac. |

What are the cristae ampularis?
|
 The crista ampullaris is the sensory organ of rotation located in the semicircular canal of the inner ear. The function of the crista ampullaris is to sense angular acceleration and deceleration. Bulge on the semicircular canal. One is the crista ampullaris, multiple is cristae ampularis. At the "ampulated end" of the semicircular canals. |

What is the common crux?
|
 The one common branch of the superior/posterior SSC, non ampulated end |
