Muscles may be named for the movement they produce. eg: the Flexor Carpi Radialis flexes the carpal joint

Origin or insertion

Muscles may be named for their distal or proximal ends. eg: The sternomandibular runs from the cartilage (manubrium) of the sternum to the ramus of the mandible (round angle of the lower jaw of skull)

Sections
|
Muscles may be named for the number of sections. eg: the triceps has three heads; lateral, medial & long

Direction
|
Muscles may be named for the direction of their fibres. eg: the fibres of the obliquus cranialis et caudalis (cranial & caudal head obliques) are slanting at an oblique angle

Location
|
Muscles may be named for where they lie. eg muscles with the word external or exturnus will be found on the extrernal or outer surface

Muscles may be named for their shape. eg: teres minor. teres means round
