PROTAGONIST

the main character in a story.

ANTAGONIST
|
a character or force that opposes or goes against another character, usually the protagonist.

DYNAMIC CHARACTER

a character that undergoes a significant change from the beginning of the story to the end.

STATIC CHARACTER
|
a character that does not change.

ROUND CHARACTER
|
a character that has many aspects to their personality.

FLAT CHARACTER
|
a character that is one dimensional and does not have many personality traits. They are often predictable.

FOIL

a character that is used to bring out the traits of another character by contrasting (being different from) the other character.

CHARACTERIZATION

the steps an author takes to develop a character.

DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION
|
when the writer makes direct statements about a character's personality and tells what the character is like.

INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION
|
the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him.
