What is Triage?
A system that looks at medical needs and urgency of each individual patient, and Sorts them based on limited data acquisitionAlso must consider resource availability
What is the priority of civilian triage?
Priority is to maximize survival of the greatest number of victims
What triage category? Patients have minimal injuries, are ambulatory, and can self-treat or seek alternative medical attention independently. Examples: include minor lacerations, contusions, and abrasions.
Minimal (III-Green)
What triage category? Patients require definitive treatment, but no immediate threat to life exists. Patients can wait for treatment without jeopardy. Examples: include minor extremity fractures, laceration with bleeding controlled, and burns over less than 25% of body surface area
Delayed (II-Yellow)
What triage category?Patients have life-threatening injuries that probably are survivable with immediate treatment. Examples: are tension pneumothorax, respiratory distress, major internal hemorrhage, and airway injuries
Immediate (I-Red)
What triage category?Patients have lethal injuries and will die despite treatment. Examples: include devastating head injuries, major third-degree burns over most of the body, and destruction of vital organs.
Expectant (0-Black)
What is START?
Triage for adults, Simple Triage And Rapid Treatment, Accomplished in 30 sec,Initial treatment is limited to correcting immediate life-threatening conditions (i.e. opening an airway and controlling severe bleeding)
