Where will you find transition metals in the periodic table?
Answer 1
In the middle
What properties do transition metals have in common?
  • they form coloured compounds
  • they are good conductors of heat and electricity
  • they can be hammered or bent into shape easily
  • they are less reactive than alkali metals such as sodium
  • they have high melting points - but mercury is a liquid at room temperature
  • they are usually hard and tough
  • they have high densities
Uses of transition metals:: iron titanium copper nickel
Iron:building materials, tools, vehicles, catalyst in manufacture of ammonia
titanium: fighter aircraft, artificial hip joints, pipes in nuclear power stations
copper: electric cables, water pipes
nickel: oins, catalyst in manufacture of margarine
Compared to the alkali metals, the transition metals are:-denser and more reactive-denser and less reactive -less dense and less reactive
Denser and less reactive
Why is steel used for building bridges?
It is strong.
Why is copper used in electricity cables?
It is a good conductor of electricity.
Nickel chloride is green. Why might you expect this?
Nickel is a transition metal.
Why is silver used for electrical contacts?
It is a good conductor of electricity.
Why is gold used for jewellery?
It stays shiny
