What are some advantages of multiple test panels
Reduced cost per test, small volume of sample is usually required, evidence of abnormalitites in organ systems that had not previously been suspected and usefulness as a pre-surgical screen
What are some disadvantages of a multiple test panel
The cost per panel may be more than the cost for one or two tests, a panel is limited to the tests chosen for it by the lab, and the lab is intended for human samples so it may not establish normals for animals
What should you do when you have collected a specimen (whole blood, serum and plasma)
Draw the blood into a container with the proper anticoagulant, gently mix well
What should you do with a specimen sample if analysis is delayed for more than an hour
Refrigerate the sample and then mix well again before the assay is performed
Can you freeze whole blood
No, it should never be frozen unless it is separated
What is the purpose of using an anticoagulant
It prevents or delays clotting of a sample
What are 4 types of anticoaulants used? what color top containor are they in? what are they used for?
EDTA - purple top, hematologic studies..........heparin- green top, plasma for blood gases........ACD (citrate)- yellow top, transfusion with blood collection bottles......sodium citrate- blue top, coagulation studies (PT, PTT)
What are some advantages of grouping tests together
They can be grouped together based on body system or physiologic process, it is the best way to interpret chemistry data, patterns of change within the groups provide useful diagnostic info, it can help select certain tests to identify disease processes and test selection is important if cost is a factor
What are electrolytes that we test
Sodium (Na), potassium (K) and chloride (Cl)
What are the 2 acid/base parameters we test
Bicarbonate and anion gap
Why should acid/base status be tested or interpreted with electrolytes
The acid base status is dependent on electrolytes
What are 3 minerals we test for
Calcium, phosphate and magnesium
What are some protein parameters we test
Total protein, albumin, globulin and A/G ratio
What organ parameters should also be evaluated when the minerals are being evaluated
The kidney parameters because the minerals are influenced by kidney function
What are tw protein parameters that make up total protein
Albumin and globulin
