How are epithelial tissue classified?
Number of cell layers and the shape of the cells in the outer layer.
What are the two basic roles of epithelial tissue?
Covering/lining and glandular.
What is the basement membrane?
A thin, glue like layer that holds the epithelium in place while remaining permeable to water and other substances.
What do exocrine secretions do?
Glands secrete substances into ducts that empty onto epithelial surfaces?
Simple Squamous are found where
Alveoli of lungs, lining of blood and lymphatic vessels, surface layers of pleura, pericardium, and peritoneum.
What do endocrine secretions do?
Glands that secrete substances that diffuse into the bloodstream.
What are squamous shaped like?
Fish scales, wider than taller, nuclei may be absent in cross section.
Transitional epithelium?
Cells change shape, great deal of stretching and recoil
Difference between keratinized and non keratinized stratified squamous tissue?
Keratinized lacks nuclei, filled with tough waterproof material and non keratinized are nucleated.
Where are stratified nonkeratinized squamous found?
Mucous membrane lining, mouth, esophagus, vagina
Where are stratified keratinized squamous found?
Surface of skin
Where are simple cuboidal found?
In many types of glands, ducts, in kidney tubules
Where are pseudostratified tissue found?
Surface of mucous membrane lining trachea, nasal, large ducts of some gland
Where are simple columnar found?
Surface layer of mucous lining of stomach, intestines, and part of the resp. tract
Where are transitional epithelium found?
Surface of membrane lining urinary bladder and ureters
