What are the 3 major elements of WHMIS?
Labels, MSDS, education/training
With regards to biological hazards, how many risk groups are there?
Risk group 1 = low individual & low community risk
Risk group 2 = moderate individual & low community risk Risk group 3 = high individual & low community risk Risk group 4 = high individual & high community risk |
With regards to biological hazards, how many containment levels are they? Which level are most labs categorized under?
3 levels;
most labs are level 2. |
What is the major difference between decontamination & sterilization?
Decontam = kills some bugs & makes items safe for disposal or use
Sterilization kills all bugs (& spores) |
What temp & pressure settings are req'd for autoclaving? How long should an autoclave cycle last?
Temp = 121 degrees C
Pressure = 15 psi (10.3 kPa) Time = 30 - 60 mins |
What indicators can be used to QC the autoclave?
Chemical indicators: tape (like at the vet clinic), or paper strips
Biological indicator bacillus stearothermophilus |
What % bleach solution is generally used for spill control? What % is used for wiping down surfaces?
1:10 dilution for spills
1:100 dilution for wiping down surfaces |
With a class 1 BSC, what is protected, product or worker?
Only the worker is protected
What are some features of a class 2 A BSC?
30% of filtered air is returned to lab, 70% is filtered and recirculates in the BSC. Min average face velocity is 75 ft/min (0.38 m/s)
What are some features class 2B BSCs?
No air is returned to the lab; this is the most commonly used type of BSC; min average face veloicty is 100 ft/min (0.5 m/s)
What is the difference between B1, B2, and B3 BSCs?
B1: 30% of air re-circulates in the BSC, 70% exhausted to outside
B2: 100% of air exhausted to outside B3 = modified A: 30% exhausted to outside, 70% re-circulates |
Which class does a BSC that is totally enclosed and gas tight belong to?
Class 3
What 7 pieces of information must be on a WHMIS supplier label?
Name of product, name of supplier, hazard symbols, risk phrases, precautionary statements, first aid info, MSDS reference
What 4 pieces of information must be on a WHMIS workplace label?
Name of product, handling precautions, exposure procedure, MSDS reference
What are the 9 pieces of information found on a MSDS?
Product info, hazardous ingredients, physical data, fire/explosion data, reactivity data, toxicological data, preventative measures, first aid procedures, who prepared the MSDS and the date is was prepared
