Front Back
the water cycle
the movement of water in different states through the Earth. The water cycle includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.
solar radiation
Energy given off by the Sun. Solar radiation heats the oceans, leading to evaoporation.
Evaporation
When water changes from a liquid to a gas. For example, water in the oceans or streams turns into water vapor.
Condensation
Gas turns into a liquid when matter is cooled.

Water vapor turns into water droplets because the temperature near the clouds is cooler. The water droplets form clouds.
Precipitation
Any form of water that falls from the air
Collection
after precipitation falls, the water needs to go back to the ocean. There are a few ways this happens. The most important ones are runoff and groundwater.
runoff
Water that returns to rivers, lakes, and streams by moving over the surface of the Earth. The water does not go into the ground; it only stays above the surface.
Groundwater
Water that goes into the soil and stays underground. Groundwater is different from runoff because runoff stays above the ground and groundwater is found underground.
Transpiration
Evaporation of water from plants back into the atmosphere.
Infiltration
When water that has fallen as precipitation goes into the ground.
Streamflow
The amount of water in rivers and streams.

The water in rivers and streams comes from different sources, but it will eventually flow back into the ocean.
