Before taking off on any trip, a safe rider makes it a point to:
1. Wear the right gear 2. Become familiar with the motorcycle 3. Check the motorcycle equipment 4. Be a responsible rider.
Right gear does what? What is the right gear?
Protect you. approved helmet. face or eye protection. protective clothing.
How many crashes result in a head injury? Why don't people wear helmets?
One out of five. they think it limits their vision or they only wear them on long trips.
What are the two types of helmet? What three things should you look for in a helmet
Full face and three quarter. 1.Meets u.s. DOT standard, has sticker 2.fits snuggly 3. Has no defects

1.An approved helmet will not obstruct vision. 2.Most crashes happen on short trips, less than 5 miles.
Helmet facts 3 & 4
3.Most crashes happen at speeds less than 30mph. 4.People who wear helmets are 3 times more likely to survive than those who don't.
Make certain that your helmet is:
Securely fastened
Effective face and eye protection must do and be what?
Free of scratches. Resistant to penetration. Give a clear view of either side. Fasten securely. Allow air to flow freely, nonfogging. Permit room for glasses.
Jacket and pants should:
Cover arms and legs completely. Fit snuggly. Jacket worn even in warm weather prevents dehydration.
Boots or shoes should:
Cover and support ankle. Soles are hard, durable and slip resistant. Short heels don't catch on uneven surfaces. Tuck laces in.
Gloves do what?
Give better grip and protection. Should be made of leather or durable material.
Know your motorcycle. What should be done first?
Read owner's manual. Start with right motorcycle for you. Familiarize with controls. check bike before each ride. keep in safe riding condition.
What should you not do to your motorcycle?
Avoid add-ons and modifications that make your motorcycle hard to handle.
Your motorcycle should:
"Fit you" your feet should touch the ground while sitting on the motorcycle.
At minimum a street legal bike should have five things, they are:
1.Headlight, taillight and brakelight 2.Front, rear brakes 3.turn signals 4.Horn 5.Two mirrors
