Front Back
Migration
A group or person moving from one country or region to another and setting up residence there. Ex. Mexican migration North to California as a result of the Mexican revolution.
Intercontinental Migration
Migration from continent to continent. Ex. Jewish migration from Europe to North America
Interregional Migration
Migration within a countries borders. Ex. retirees migrating from colder climates North to warmer climates in the South.
Guest Workers
Persons who migrated legally to fill job openings, usually as part of a labor contract. Ex. Asian migrants in the medical profession to fill physician shortages in the U.S.
Rural to Urban Migration
Migrating from the countryside to a more populated city or town. Ex. When farms fail and the farmer must now find a way to make a living, will migrate towards cities with industry.
Forced Migration
A group of people forced to move, usually by a government. Ex. Cherokee Indians forced removal from Florida and Georgia by the government.
Reluctant Relocation
Migration that is not forced, but also no entirely voluntary. Ex. Migration as a by-product of war or politics
Volitional
Voluntary Migration. Ex. persons who move because of a natural catastrophe such as Hurricane Katrina.
Push Factors
Adverse conditions that lead to the decision to migrate. Ex. War and famine
Pull Factors
Good conditions that exist at the place where they are migrating to. Ex. a job opportunity
Place utility
Determines migration and how much a person is satisfied or disatisified with a particular place. ex. leave from a low paying job to a higher paying job
Spatial Search
Evaluating other alternatives for migration. Ex. pro's and con's of one town over another
Step Migration
Small migration steps. Ex. moving from a rural town to a small town to a city to a metroplis.
Chain Migration
A support network of migrants, referred to as migrant fields. Ex. China Town in California and New York.
Counter Migration
Migrating but to the orginal place of origin. Ex. Retirees migrating to Florida in the winter and back to the northern states in the summer months.
