What does standard error of the mean actually mean?
An estimate of the spread (standard deviation) of sample means around the true population mean
Arithmetic mean vs geometric mean
Arithmetic mean = what u know as mean, geometric is square root of the combined product of the values, geometric mean more appropriate in skewed distributions
What does relative risk mean?
A way of expressing whether you're more or less likely to have an outcome e.g. disease if you are or are not exposed to a factor e.g. smoking. Relative risk of 1 means there is no difference in disease outcome. More than one means that exposure to the factor increases the risk of disease, and less than one the opposite.
What does odds mean?
An expression of having X divided by not having X. The resulting number is not intuitive like relative risk
What is the odds ratio?
The ratio of odds of having the disease with exposure divided by the odds of having the disease without exposure. OR>1 means positive association, <1 means negative association
Meaning of sensitivity:
No. of positive test results that actually have disease/total no that actually have disease
Meaning of specificity
No of correctly identified negative results/total no that are actually healthy
Positive predictive value
No. of correctly identified positives/total number with a positive outcome
Negative predictive value
No. of correctly identified negatives/total number with a negative outcome
