What is sport psychology?
The scientific study of people and their behaviors in sport and exercise activities and the practical application of that knowledge
Two objectives of sport psych
1. understanding effects of psychological factors on physical or motor performance2. understanding the effects of participating in physical activity on physiological development, health, and well being
Roles of sport psychologists
1. educating2. research3. consulting: working with teams to improve performance
Different types of knowledge development in sport psychology
1. professional practice: obtain knowledge thru experience. innovative, but less reliable2. scientifically derived knowledge: highly reliable, but low practicality
Three orientations of sport psych field
1. psychophysiological orientation: best way to study behavior by examining pysiological process of brain (assess heart rate, brain wave activity, muscle APs)2. social-physiological orientation: behavior is determined by social environment and personal makeup of athlete. I.E examinnig how a leader's style fosters group cohesion and influence participation3. cognitive-behavioral orientation: emphasize athlete's thoughts and behaviors. measure self-confidence, anxiety, motivation, imagery, etc
Psychodynamic approach (personality)
-unconscious determinants of behavior-influence of early experiences dictate adult actions-ID vs SUPEREGO**NOT ALL BEHAVIOR is under conscious control (Sigmund Freud)
Trait Approach (personality)
-common and specific traits only in the individual, not found in exact form in others-traits are stable over time-fails to take into account situational factors-traits are synonymous with dispositions to act in a certain way
Situation approach (personality)
-behavior is determined by situation or environment - influence sport behavior by changing reinforcements in environment
SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY
- part of situation approach - explained by observational learning (modeling) and reinforcement (feedback)
Interactional Approach
- both traits and situation influence behavior
Phenomenological Approach (personality)
- most important determinants of behavior are a person's understanding of themself and interpretation of their environment - subjective experience and view of world and yourself are critical- use this approach to examine mental strategies, skills, and behaviors-psychological skills can help athletes get the most out of their talent
BIG FIVE MODEL OF PERSONALITY
1. neuroticism vs emotional stability2. extraversion vs introversion3. openness to experience: originality, curiosity4. aggreeableness: altruism, modesty5. conscientiousness: self- discipline, constraint
Motivation
Direction and intensity of on'es efforts- understanding motivations help us know why athletes participate in respective activities
VIEWS of motivation
1. participant centered: personality needs, goals of a student or athlete are primary determinant of motivated behavior2. situation centered: there can be positive or negative situations that influence motivation3. interactional view: person and situation combined affect motivation
Needs achievement motivation theory
- we want to achieve success and avoid failure - we seek out situational factors to test that success - depending on outcome of performance, we either look for more challenges to achieve success or avoid them to avoid failure
