Designed as a learning experiment with experimenter playing "scientist" and confederate playing role of "learner", real subject is assigned role of "teacher", design: teacher ordered scientist to deliver shocks to learner after mistakes, obedience measured by how intense a shock the subject (teacher) is willing to give, the closer the subject got to the learner, the less obedient he was,effect of peers around was also lessening of obedience

-expirmental study-social influence: effect of other ppl on our thoughts, perceptions and behaviors-most effective way of limiting obedience was to have the subject's peers rebel-people undestimated the effect of social influence when explaining their own behavior-interviews with some subjects revealed their ability to interpret the situation by drawing upon their own experiences and beliefs
