A generalized attitude toward members of a social group
9stereotype
—a generalized belief about members of a group —For example: “Older people are mean”

behaviors directed toward others because of their group membership

—prejudice and discrimination toward people of a given race

—prejudice and discrimination toward people of a given gender – shown in a more subtle form – overlap with gender roles- you acknowledge a different gender norm associating with men and women

9IAT
Implicit Association Test - a measure of reaction time – show you images or words, “press this button when you see positive word, press other button for negative word – fast as possible – and then with white and black faces” positive words and white faces, negative words and black faces – cognition test – how much is your cognitional response influenced by media - Takes white person shorter about of time with white/good than white bad (taller the bar lower the reaction) - White people more racist
9social dominance orientation
A motivation to have one's group dominate other social groups
9 ethnocentric
Believing in the superiority of ones own ethnic and cultural group, and having a corresponding disdain for all other groups
9authoritarian personality
A personality thats disposed to favor obedience to authority and intolerance of outgroups and those lowers in status
9 realistic group conflict theory
Theory that prejudice arises from competition between groups for scarce resources
9social identity
The "we' aspect of our self-concept; the part of our answer to "who am i?" that comes from our group membership
9ingroup
"us" - a group of people who share a sense of belonging, a feeling of common identity
9outgroup
"them" - a group that people perceive as distinctively different from or apart from their ingroup
