HGH
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Anterior Pituitary
-Growth of All Cells, inhibited by somatostatin -peptide hormone |
ACTH
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Anterior Pituitary
-Stimulates adrenal cortex to release aldosterone etc. -peptide hormone |
FSH
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Anterior Pituitary
-In females it promotes ovaries to develop follicles, in males it stimulates sperm production (spermatogenesis) -peptide hormone |
LH
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Anterior pituitary
-Causes ovulation & development of corpus luteum, stimulate estrogen and testosterone secretion (men). -peptide |
TSH
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Anterior Pituitary
-Stimulates release of T3 and t4 in thyroid via 2nd messenger cAMP. -peptide |
Prolactin
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Anterior Pituitary
-Promotes production of milk in breasts -peptide |
Oxytocin
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Posterior Pituitary
-Milk ejection and uterine contraction -peptide hormone (all pituitary makes peptide hormones) |
ADH
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Posterior pituitary
-Targets kidney to increase water reabsorption, increases blood pressure (less urine). Also called Vasopressin; coffee and beer are ADH blockers -peptide |
Aldosterone
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Made in Adrenal Cortex
-Increases renal reabsorption of sodium in distal tubule, while increasing K+ excretion. Causes a net increase of particles in plasma, which leads to higher blood pressure. -Steroid |
Cortisol
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Adrenal Cortex
-During stress it increases blood levels of carbohydrates (glucose), proteins, and fats. Also stimulates gluconeogenesis while decreasing inflammation. -steroid hormone |
Epinephrine/Norepinephrine
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Adrenal Medulla
-Stimulates Sympathetic Actions. Catecholamines. Vasoconstrict organs and vasodilate skeletal muscle. -Neither, it's a tyrosine derivative that acts via a 2nd messenger cAMP. Its also water soluble. So kind of like a peptide |
T3 (triiodothyronine), T4 (thyroxine)
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Thyroid
-Increases basal metabolic rate. regulated by TSH, it increases gene transcription in nearly all cells of body. -It is lipid soluble, carried by plasma protein carriers; so it acts like a steroid, but it isn't one. Thyroxine is a peptide hormone, but it's hydrophobic enough to enter cells. It binds to a receptor in the nucleus. |
Calcitonin
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Thyroid gland
-Lowers blood calcium (calci-bone-in), decreases osteoclast activity. -It is a large peptide hormone |
PTH
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Parathyroid Glands
-Increases serum calcium levels but stimulating osteoclasts, and increases calcium reabsorption by kidneys and small intestine. -Peptide Hormone |
Insulin
-where's it made -what's it do? -peptide or steroid? |
-Pancreas Beta Cells "Located behind stomach"
-Promotes entry of glucose into cells by making them more permeable to glucose, decreasing blood glucose level. -Peptide |
