Alveoli
In the lungs, the tiny, thin-walled sacs arranged in grapelike clusters at the end of each bronchiole; oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange takes place between the alveoli and capillaries. (ch. 21, p. 578)
Diaphragm
Muscle beneath the lungs that contracts and relaxes with breathing and that helps move air in and out of the body. (ch. 21, p. 579)
Chronic bronchitis
Long-lasting respiratory disease in which the bronchial tubes are irritated and too much mucus is produced. (ch. 21, p. 581)

Breathing
Process whereby fresh air moves into and stale air moves out of the lungs
Respiration
The chemical reaction in which oxygen from the air we breathe is combined with the glucose from the food we eat to produce energy, carbon dioxide, and water vapor
