Pharynx
Tubelike passageway for both food and air through which inhaled air passes after it is warmed and moistened in the nasal cavity. (ch. 21, p. 577)
Larynx
Airway to which the vocal chords are attached. (ch. 21, p. 577)
Trachea
Tube with rings of cartilage to keep it open & prevent it from collapsing; is lined with mucous and cilia to trap dust, bacteria and pollen.
Bronchi
Two short branches at the lower end of the trachea that carry air into the lungs. (ch. 21, p. 578)
Alveoli
In the lungs, the tiny, thin-walled sacs arranged in grapelike clusters at the end of each bronchiole; oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange takes place between the alveoli and capillaries. (ch. 21, p. 578)
Diaphragm
Muscle beneath the lungs that contracts and relaxes with breathing and that helps move air in and out of the body. (ch. 21, p. 579)
Chronic bronchitis
Long-lasting respiratory disease in which the bronchial tubes are irritated and too much mucus is produced. (ch. 21, p. 581)
Emphysema
Respiratory disease in which the alveoli in the lungs lose their ability to expand and contract. (ch. 21, p. 582)
Asthma
Lung disorder in which there may be shortness of breath, wheezing, or coughing and that may occur as an allergic reaction. (ch. 21, p. 583)
Capillary
Microscopic blood vessel that connects arteries and veins; nutrients, oxygen, waste materials, and carbon dioxide diffuse through its walls.
Breathing
Process whereby fresh air moves into and stale air moves out of the lungs
Respiration
The chemical reaction in which oxygen from the air we breathe is combined with the glucose from the food we eat to produce energy, carbon dioxide, and water vapor
Epiglottis
Small flap of tissue that normally closes over the tracheal opening when food is swallowed; prevents food and liquid from entering the larynx
Bronchioles
The bronchi branch into these smaller and smaller tubes. At the end of these tubes are clusters of tiny, thin-walled sacs.
Lung cancer
Major cause is smoking;leading type of cancer deaths
