Testes
The reproductive gland in a male vertebrate
Scrotum
The external sac of skin enclosing the testes in
most mammals.
Vas deferens
The main duct through which semen is carried from
the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct.
Ejaculatory duct
Either of the paired ducts in males, formed by the
junction of the seminal ducts with the vas deferens, that pass through
the prostate and empty into the urethra, and through which semen is
ejaculated.
Semen
A viscous whitish secretion of the male
reproductive organs, containing spermatozoa and consisting of secretions
of the testes, seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands.
Also called seminal fluid or spermatozoa.
Seminal vesicles
Either of a pair of pouchlike glands situated on
each side of the male urinary bladder that secrete seminal fluid and
nourish and promote the movement of spermatozoa through the urethra.
Prostate gland
A gland in male mammals surrounding the urethra at
the base of the bladder that controls release of urine from the bladder
and secretes a fluid which is a major constituent of semen.
Bulbourethral gland
Either of two small racemose glands that are
located below the prostate and discharge a component of the seminal
fluid into the urethra. Also called Cowper's gland.
Spermatogenesis
The process of
producing sperm
Seminiferous tubules
Any of the tubercles of the testes which produce
spermatozoa
Epididymis
A long, narrow, convoluted tube, part of the
spermatic duct system, that lies on the posterior aspect of each
testicle, connecting it to the vas deferens.
Spermatogonia
Any of the cells of the gonads in male organisms
that are the progenitors of spermatocytes.
Spermatocyte
A primary spermatocyte divides into two secondary
spermatocytes, which in turn divide to form the spermatids.
Spermatid
Any of the four haploid cells formed by meiosis in
a male organism that develop into spermatozoa without further division.
Sertoli cell
Any of the elongated, striated cells of the
seminiferous tubules of the testis, to which spermatids attach for
nourishment during spermatogenesis.
