Valmiki asked his teacher, Narada, who was the greatest human being. Narada responded that Rama had been the greatest human being. Later, Valmiki was watching two cranes. Suddenly, a hunter shot one of the cranes. Valmiki thought this was so unjust, he began to sing a verse about it. When the god Brhama heard Valmiki sing, he told him he needed to tell the story of Rama in this verse.
