An individual's thoughts and feelings. Examples; what you think about, your emotions, your mood, attitudes, dreams etc. Cannot be directly observed.
Can mental processes be often interpretedby observing behaviour?
Yes. Examples; A person who is observed chanting anti-war statements at an anti-war rally may be considered to have a negative attitude towards war and rapid eye movements observed in a sleeping person indicate that they are most likely to be dreaming.
Mental processes and behaviour are closely interrelated and influence each other continuously. Example?
Feeling angry about the way someone has treated you may affect what you think about that person and the way you behave to them next timne you meet.
A person has to complete how many years of study to be able to register as a psychologist?
Equivalent of 6 years of study. Four years of study at university, 2 years of a post-graduate study in a certain area of psychology or two years training under supervision of registered psychologist.
Can psychologists perform medical procedures, prescribe medication or hospitalise someone?
No. Psychologists are not trained in medicine, so they do not have the legal authority to do so.
Alternative for psychologists?
They can use counseeling and various types of psychological therapies to assist clients.
A psychiatrist is...
A qualified medical doctor who is also a specialist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness.

Equilvalent of 13 years. 6 years of university study/training to gain qualifications as a doctor. Work as intern in hospital for 12 months. 1 year as a Resident Medical Officer; must include experience in psychiatry. Post-gradute training takes 5 years.
