What is the first memory stores what is its function and storage time?
Sensory memory- which focuses on encoding. It holds info that enter the senses for a short time while we select what it is important. 1/4 for iconic or visual info to 2 seconds for echoic or audio
What is the second memory store. what is its function and storage time?
Short term memory- functions are to temporarily store info and convert to LTM. It lasts for less than 60 seconds if not rehearsed. It is also where you solve many of your basic problems that you overcome
What is the last memory store? What is its function and storage time?
Long term memory is a storehouse for memory. Can hold limitless info
What are the three memory process and how do they relate to forgetting?
Encoding- Transforming into a way that can be storedStorage- Retention of encoded material over timeRetrieval-self explanatory
What is the difference between maintenance and rehearsal?
Maintenance rehearsal is silently repeating something over and overElaborative rehearsal- Linking new information to older memories
What are the two types of LTM
Procedural memory- Typing writing a bike etcDeclarative memory- facts events
What is the difference between recall and
recognition?
Recall- a direct retrieval of facts or informationrecognition- ability to remember previously learned material
5. Describe the serial position curve (including the
primacy & recency effects)
Remebering words that were at the beggining and end of listsPrimary effect- Greater recall of items that were presented first in a list of itemsRecency effect- Greater recall of last items
What is the von Restorff effect (Distinctiveness)? What are flashbulb
memories and how accurate are they?
Distinctiveness is more accurate recall of items that are distinctive, AKA artichoke. Flashbulb memories are not accurate. They are vivid memories of an event that caused an intense emotional reaction
What is relearning and what is meant by savings score?
Relearning is looking over the same material againSaving score is first time it took an hour second time 45 minutes score is 25 percent
Whats the difference between recall and recognition?
In recall you remeber information. Recognition is not rembering something but being primed into rembering it. IE recognition is mutiple choice exams
What is encoding faulure?
Forgetting because never had the information in the first place. IE what does a penny look like?
What the difference between decay and disuse?
Decay- Fading over time in STM if not accessedDisuse- Forgetting in LTM
What are the two kinds of interference and how they influence memory?
Proactive learning- Previously learned info affects recall of info that you learned later: learn A Learn B Test BRetroactive learning- new learning inhibits old learning Learn A Learn B Test A
What is cue-dependent forgetting and what is its relationship to
state-dependent learning?
Cue dependent forgetting is forgetting something because of lack of cues. State dependent learning means to learn something you must be in the same state that you were in when you learned it
