Front Back
CATI
Computer-assisted telephone interview
Closed-ended questions
Limited number of response alternatives are given. more structured approach; easier to code and response alternatives are same for everyone
Cluster sampling
Method of sampling in which clusters of individuals are identified. Clusters are sampled, and then all individuals in each cluster are included in sample
Confidence interval
Interval of values within which there is given level of confidence (e.g. 95%) where the population value lies
Face-to-face interval
Require interviewer and respondent meet to conduct interview. quite expensive and time-consuming.
Focus group
Interview with group of about 6-10 brought together for period of usually 2-3 hours. members selected because have particular knowledge or interest in topic. requires people to both spend time and incur some costs traveling to location, usually monetary or gift incentive.
Graphic rating scale
Requires mark along continuous 100-mm line that is anchored with descriptions at each end. how would you rate the movie you just say?not enjoyable-------------------------------------enjoyableruler placed on line to obtain score on scale that ranges 0-100
Group survey administration
Questionnaires administered through mail, on internet, and with other technologies
Haphazard (convenience) sampling
Selecting subjects in haphazard manner, usually on basis of availability, and not with regard to having a representative sample of population; type of nonprobability sampling
High-frequency scale
Schwarz calls first scale a high-frequency scale because most alternatives indicate high frequency of exercise.
Internet survey
Survey on internet, both open- and close-ended questions. responses immediately sent to researcher. drawbacks: results similar to using traditional methods (proper sampling), and ambiguity about characteristics of individuals providing info for study. Misrepresent their age, gender, or ethnicity
Interviewer bias
Intentional or unintentional influence exerted by an interviewer in such a way that the actual or interpreted behavior of respondents is consistent with the interviewer's expectations
Mail survey
Surveys mailed to individuals at home or business address. drawback: potentially low response rates.
Nonprobability sampling
Type of sampling procedure in which one cannot specify the probability that any member of the population will be included in the sample
Open-ended questions
Respondents are free to answer in any way they like. require time to categorize and code the responses and are therefore more costly
