Front Back
Acoustic shadow
Decreases level of high frequency sounds. Occurs when high frequency sound located to one side. Doesn't occur for low frequency sound. Informs listener about location (left/right) or object.
Head-related transfer function (HRTF)
Diff btwn sound source (distal stimulus) and sound entering ears. Frequencies are distorted.
Auditory scene
Array of environmental sounds.
Auditory scene analysis
Process by which listener separates diff sounds from one another. Identify which object produced each sound.
Auditory grouping laws
Heuristics that allow listeners to separate sounds from one another.
What are the 5 auditory grouping laws?
Location, similarity in timbre/pitch, proximity in time, good continuation, and experience.
Location
If object moves in continuous path, resulting sound should be continuous rather than disconnected.
Similarity in timbre/pitch
Sounds that have same timbre or pitch are grouped together.
Wessel effect
Perceptual system groups similar timbres together. If notes played slowly, tones of diff timbres increase in pitch. If notes played fast, decreasing pitch of timbre.
Compound melodic lines
Auditory stream segregation can be demonstrated musically.
Proximity in time
Sounds that occur rapidly are usu produced by the same source. When hi/low tones are played slowly, pitch seems to alternate. When hi/low tones are played rapidly, auditory stream segregation occurs.
Good continuation
Streams that remain constant or change smoothly are usu produced by the same source.
Experience
Top-down knowledge --> auditory grouping.
Ventriloquism effect
What happens when sound and visual source don't come from same location? Visual system "overrides" auditory system. Visual stimulus "captures" attention.
What are the 2 main units of language?
Graphemes and phonemes.
