What types of action occur in Somatic system?
Skeletal muscles : move limbs
What types of action occur in Autonomic system?
-Smooth muscles: change blood pressure, digest food
-cardiac muscles: heartbeat -endocrine glands: secrete hormones -Exocrine glands: secrete sweat, saliva etc |
What kinds of action might happen within the CNS
-update memory, switch tasks etc. Not occuring out in environment, but brain uses same patterns sometimes for these nternal actions
Supplementary motor cortex is _____ to primary motor cortex and ____ to premotor cortex?
Rostral, dorsal |
Describe how motor control is hierarchical
Breaks it down into chunks step by step |
Provide evidence for the fact that motor plans can be abstract
Eg can draw with hand, foot, teeth, even though they are controlled by completely different muscles --> shows that at a high level the plan isn't about what muscles to move, its lower down in hierarchy that figure out which muscles to move = motor equivilence |
Inverse models
•current position and desired position --> motor comands --> used to create motor plans - good for figuring out how to get to some desired goal state |
Forward models
-helpful because once you've decided what you want to do , can compare where you want it to go with where it's going along the way and if something goes wrong you can detect it as quickly as possible -Current position & motor commands --> predicted position -Used to evaluate motor plans and/or action |
What is an efference copy
-brain comes up with motor command, can send to motor control, AND send a copy to another part of brain, so don't have to wait to see what muscle actually does. --> used for the prediction |
Feed forward control
Send a command to a limb and then hope its executed correctly -Faster but less accurate --> eg used for eye movements (saccades) |
Feed back control
Motor command sent to muscle -actual state compared to desired state -Adjustments made based on errors -slower but mor accurate |
Would the feedforward controller use a forward model or an inverse model
Inverse
-terminology is confusing -in feedforward, uses an inverse model because its using a desired state and working back |
Forward models used in what part of control?
In the feedback state during feedback control
Premotor cortex is involved in
Selecting goals and planning actions at a conceptual level
-particularly when plans are driven by external stimuli (idea that you will drink from cup) |
Planning of voluntary actions begins at a conceptual level based on _____?
Goals |
