Front Back
Tissue swelling that results from water accumulating between cells is known as?
Edema.
What does Protein synthesis depend on?
Depends on a diet that provided adequate protein and essential amino acids.
In comparison to the composition of carbohydrates and fats, which element found in proteins make them unique?
Nitrogen.
What 4 atoms are in proteins?
Carbon, Hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.
What is the basic structure of an amino acid?
A central carbon atom with a hydrogen atom, an amino acid group (NH2), and an acid group (COOH), and a side chain.
Protein is more complex than what 2 things?
Carbohydrates and fats.
How many amino acids are proteins made of?
20 different amino acids, each with a different side group.
Essential Amino Acids
9 amino acids; the body either cant make at all or cant make in sufficient quantity to meet its needs. Must be supplied by diet.
Nonessential Amino Acids
The body can make these amino acids.
Conditionally Essential Amino Acids
An amino acid that is normally non-essential, but must be supplied by the diet in special circumstances when the need for it exceeds the bodys ability to produce it.
Peptide Bonds
Link amino acids.
What do condensation reactions form?
Dipeptides, tripeptides, and polypeptides.
Dipeptide
Two amino acids bonded together.
Tripeptide
Three amino acids bonded together.
Polypeptide
Many (ten or more) amino acids bonded together.
