What is evolution?
Evolution is defined as a change in a species over time.
State the 1st basic ideas behind the theory of evolution.
The traits of an organism change over time
State the 2nd basic ideas behind the theory of evolution.
The reasons for these changes can be understood
State the 3rd basic ideas behind the theory of evolution.
New types of species arise as these changes accumulate.
What is a theory?
A theory is a proposed explanation for a wide variety of observations and facts
How much evidence supports a theory?
The evidence that supports a theory is a great deal
What is Linnaeus mainly known for?
Linnaeus was mainly known for his classification system that grouped organisms based on their similarities
What did Linnaeus’ system (work) show in terms of evolution and the role genetics played to make it happen?
It shows that some of the organisms he classified were not fixed but may have arisen from others through hybridization
What was the first idea of Buffon’s work tie him to evolution?
That species shared ancestors instead of arising separately
What was the second idea of Buffon’s work tie him to evolution?
  1. that the earth was more than 6000 years old.
What ideas did Erasmus Darwin contribute toward evolution?
  1. that living things were decended from a common ancestor and that more complex forms of life arose from less complex forms.
What was the first idea that Lamarck propose in terms of evolution?
That all organisms evolved toward perfection
What was the second idea that Lamarck propose in terms of evolution?
Complexity and that changes in the environment caused organisms to change and that they were therefore somehow adapted to their environment.
Name and describe Lamarck’s first assumption.
Desire to change, which means that organisms have an inborn urge to better themselves and become more fit for their environment
Name and describe Lamarck’s second assumption.
Use and disuse, which is that change occurred because organisms could alter their shape by using their bodies in new ways
