Talk about role theory and how did the theory of "role theory" begin?
|
- all roles exist in relation to other roles in a situation. dependent on other roles and on other situations. Ex. cant be a mother unelss you have children.
-Began as a study of the negative. ex. Lack of role functioning - role conflict, role strain |
Role making
|
-process of attempting to define & modify roles.
- we act as if there are distinct roles that are clear & consistent |
Roles have varying degrees of..?
|
Roles have varying degrees of concreteness and consistency.
-we act as if they are clear & consistent -we attempt to define roles & modify them --> process is called role making |
Whats the opposition of role making
|
Role taking
|
Role making
|
- changes in roles
- principle of role reciprocity - explains changes in behvaiour - change in our role reflects a changed perception of the role of the other - through interaction, we test our assumptions of our and other's roles |
Role taking and its problem
|
-act of taking the perspective of generalized other & folling a role (behaving) as we believe it to be defined.
-imagine how another person with another role would define the situation and act according to their perspective -its impossible to PERFECTLY grasp the other's POV -always colored by our own perspective -we perform the role based on how we perceive the role of the other. Problem - roels are not always clearly defined. |
Roles as groups of behvaiour
|
-role taking/making involves grouping units of behaviour
-role refers to a pattern of behaviour which is consistent for a given type of actor |
What are role sets?
|
A cluster of roles
ex. husband, father son, grandson = a set of family roles -each of us has a set of roles we perform |
Roles in Organizations & Culture
|
- more complex
- roles - negotiated and revised to provide a stable framework for interaction - compromise b/w role taking & accordance to organizational rules - coordinate our actions with others = efficiency |
Role differentiation (internal validation of roles/external validation of roles)
|
- the same behaviour can be a display of different roles under different circumstances
- internal validation of roles: successful anticipation of behaviours of others in order to play out one's own role -external validation of roles: based on determining if one's behaviour is judged to be appropriate for the role played |
