-gospel influence-tempo can be fast or slow-a lot of emotion-often a horn section involves (brass instruments)-intended for dance-slang (i.e. "y'all")-syncapation (putting an accent on a beat)-genre of rhythm and blues-premise of soul music is the harmony-secularized version of gospel music-many soul artists were trained in church (i.e. Aretha Franklin)-rise and fall of soul music mirrors the civil rights movement

-classic blues was the first style of blues recorded-female vocalists backed up by jazz musicians-composed songs either by singers or songwriters-usually found in urban settings-acoustic era of recordings (low fidelity) - before microphones-typical image: large person with large lung capacity (no microphones!)-music made for black community
