What is cell division?
It is part of reproduction, growth and repair.it involves the distribution of identical genetic material DNA to 2 daughter cells
What is mitosis?
Thre process by which 2 new daughter cells are generated
What is mitosis useful for?
Repair of tissuesgrowth
What is meiosis?
The process by which gametes are produced
What happens during interphase?
G1:cells grow rapidly wilie performing metabollic processes-makes proteins needed for DNA replication-copies some of its organelles in preparation for cell divisionS:cells' DNA is copeid during cell replicattion -all of the chromosomes have now been replicatedG2: makes final preparations to divide-makes additional proteins & organelles such as microtubules (required for mitosis)
What can be observed during interphase?
-no chromosomes are visible -DNA & histones & centrioles all replicated
What happens during prophase?
-chromosomes condensed and visible-centrioles at opposite poles of the cell- nucleolus diappears
What happens during metaphase?
-nuclear envelope disappears-chromosomes align at thee equator of the cell-spindle fibres connect centrioles to chromosomes
What happens during anaphase?
- centromeres split allowing chromatids to seperate-chromatids move towards the poles, centromeres first (pulled by motor proteins walking along the microtubule tracks)
What happens during telophase?
-spindle fibres disperse-nuclear envelope forms-chromosomes uncoil & become invisible
What happens during cytokinesis?
in animal cells
