Name all of the lobes of the brain
Superior: Frontal, parietal, occiptalSide: Temporal
What does the frontal lobe do?
Performs higher mental functions such as planning, deciding, and perceiving.Affects personality/temperament. Phineas Gage is a prime example of this.Motor cortex lies at the back of the frontal lobe.
What does the parietal lobe do?
Specializes in sensations such as warmth, smoothness, pressure, etc. Keeps track of body part location Right side esp keeps track of spacial location.Left side esp locates sources of speech sounds & helps extract meaning from reading/writing. Contains somatosensory cortex at front & angular gyrus at lower rear.
What does the occipital lobe do?
Receives stimulation from eyes Contains visual cortex at rear Constructs moving picture of outside world by sending input to specific areas specialized for color, movement, shape, shading, facial recognition, etc.
What does the temporal lobe do?
Registers sound. Processes speech.Stores long term memories. Contains auditory cortex at superior part.
Name all of the cortexes.
Superior: Motor cortex, somatosensory (sensory) cortex, visual cortexSide: Auditory cortex
What does the motor cortex do?
Controls body's movements by sending messages via motor nerves to voluntary muscles.Right controls left side of body and vice versa. Contains upside down map of body called a homounculus.
What does the somatosensory (sensory) cortex do?
Primary processing area for sensations of touch, temperature, pain, & pressure all over the body. Relates sensory information to mental map of the body so you know the source of the sensations.
What does the visual cortex do?
Recieves info from optic nerves. (Right nerve to left side and vice versa) Maps spacial info in vision.Good at recognizing patterns.
What does the auditory cortex do?
Helps you make sense of sounds.Left side processes speech.
Name the layers of the brain
Brain stem, limbic system, & cerebral cortex
What does the angular gyrus do?
Involved in processing visual & auditory info & comprehending language.
Name the main parts of the limbic system
Amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus, thalamus
What does the amygdala do?
Amygdala = "almond" in Greek. Involved in memory & emotion, especially fear and agression.
What does the hippocampus do?
Hippocampus = seahorse in Greek. Two on each side of brainConects present with past and memorizes location of things in space.
