Where are APs translated into perception?
Cerebral Cortex
What is Sensory Perception?
Conscious awareness of stimuli received by sensory receptors
How do General Senses work?
Located all over the body. A receptor picks up the stimulus and sends it to the brain. Hence, they are "primary receptors."
How do Special Senses work?
Sight, smell, taste, hearing, balanceReceptor releases neurotransmitter, which binds to a second neuron, which goes to the brain. Hence, they are "secondary receptors."
5 Stimulus-Based Receptors
MechanoreceptorsChemoreceptorsThermoreceptorsPhotoreceptorsNociceptors
Mechanoreceptors
Stimulated by compression, bending, stretching of cells(Touch, pressure, hearing, balance, IN EARS)
Chemoreceptors
Stimulated by chemical (which often binds to ligand-gated voltage channel(Taste, smell)
Nociceptors
Extreme mechanical, chemical, temperature stimulusLocated deeper(Extreme pain)
3 Location-Based Receptors
ExteroreceptorsVisceroreceptorsProprioceptors
Exteroreceptors
Associated with skin
Visceroreceptors
Associated with organs
Proprioceptors
Associated with joints/tendons
Free Nerve Endings
Poke up into skinVery simple, bare dendritesCan be stimulus-based receptors (if thermoreceptors, they'll be more cool than warm)
Merkel (Tactile) Disks
MechanoreceptorsBranched (flattened fibers), flat, wideRight under skin, around basement membraneResponds to light touch & superficial pressure
Hair Follicle Receptors
MechanoreceptorsLight bending of hair
