Question 1
Appendicular skeleton
Answer 1
Includes the bones of the thoracic girdle and forelimbs and the pelvic girdle and hind limbs
What is the vestigial bone?
Also known as the clavicle. Cat - small sliver of bone . Dog - small bone. ( The dog's clavical is a small oval plate located cranial to the shoulder within the clavicular tendon in the braciocephalicus muscle. )
What is one of the first bone to show ossification in the fetal dog?
The Clavical is one of the first bones to show a center of ossification in the fetal dog, but in the adult it is partly or completely cartilaginous.
Scapula
A flat roughly triangular bone with two surfaces, three borders, and three angles.
Pick up your scapula and point out the important parts.
Glenoid cavity Neck Spine Acromion Suprahamate process (present in the cat, absent in the dog) Hamate process (distal part of the acromion in the cat) Supraspinous fossa Infraspinous fossa Serrated face Subscapular fossa Borders – cranial, caudal, dorsal Angles – cranial and caudal Infraglenoid tubercle Supraglenoid tubercle
The spine of the scapula is on what surface?
This structure is on the lateral surface of the scapula and divides it into nearly two equal fossae by a shelf of bone.
The Acromion
On the scapula. It is the truncated process at the distal end of the spine where the deltoideus muscle arises.
Supraspinous fossa
On the scapula. It is the entire lateral surface cranial to the spine of the scapula. The supraspinatus m. arises from all but the distal part of this.
Infraspinous fossa
On the scapula. It is caudal to the spine, is triangular, with the apex at the neck. The infraspinatus arises from this.
Serrated Fact
On the medial (costal) surface of scapula. This places serves as the insertion for the serratus ventralis m.
Subscapular fossa
On the medial (costal) surface of the scapula. The subscapularis comes off of here.
Suprahamate process
Present on the acromion in the cat but not in the dog
What are the three borders of the scapula?
Cranial, Caudal, Dorsal
Scapular notch
This notch is formed near the ventral angle (glenoid cavity) and the border is concaved as it nears the formation of the neck.
What are the two angles of the scapula?
Cranial angle (between cranial border and the dorsal border) and the Caudal angle (between the dorsal border and the caudal border)
